Edema
The human body is approximately 75% water. Water is essential to our health so much that we cant live more than a few days without it, and too much water stored in our body can be detrimental to our health, so a delicate balance is essential. If the body starts to retain fluid, you will notice swelling or puffiness in various parts of the body, typically in the ankles, feet, legs, face and fingers. Edema occurs when water gets trapped in the tissues of the body. There are many causes for edema, including: late stages of pregnancy, PMS and hormonal shifts, excessive consumption of sodium, sluggish lymphatic and kidney systems, allergies, certain medications, heart and circulation problems, excessive standing, hot weather, high/low blood pressure, thyroid problems, and even dehydration. If the body gets an inadequate supply of water it automatically retains the water it has stored, not flushing itself out (retaining toxins) leads to a build-up of water in the tissues. It is suggested you drink a minimum of 8 (8oz) glasses of water daily- more if you consume caffeine beverages or alcohol. Drinking the recommended amounts of water will aid Kidney function by flushing out extra fluid, cleanse the lymphatic system, and support the circulatory system. Moderate exercise and following a healthy diet (eliminating sugar and refined products) will also help.
