Flatulence is a common, but embarrassing problem. It occurs when you need to release a build up of pressure in the body. It is caused by food not being digested properly in the stomach and small intestine. The food then proceeds into the large intestine undigested. When the food enters the large intestine, it then becomes mixed with bacteria existing there, while the food is still breaking down. This process causes gas to be produced, and pressure which vents naturally through the anus. Flatulence is often accompanied by abdominal cramping or bloating. Occasionally excessive flatulence could indicate more serious conditions such as: irritable bowel syndrome, gall bladder disease, stomach ulcers, or bowel obstructions. See your doctor if this condition does not improve over time.
