pH (potential of hydrogen) is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. It is measured on a scale of 0 to 14 the lower the pH the more acidic the solution, the higher the pH the more alkaline (or basic) the solution. When a solution is neither acid nor alkaline, it has a pH of 7, which is neutral (balanced). Most people today tend to be in the 5.0 to 6.5 range. Numbers in this range show we are too acidic. Our health pays a price when we hover in the more acidic range. When the body is in a balanced pH range all the systems of the body have a much better chance of functioning at their best. When the pH is outside the balanced range it can affect all other systems.

Just as the body has the ability to regulate its own temperature, it aims to preserve a very narrow pH range-especially in the blood. Optimally your blood should have a pH of 7.365. If it has to, the body will even put stress on other tissues or body systems to assist in maintaining this range. However if the body is too far out of range for a prolonged time this imbalance can overwhelm your body and cellular health will be burdened. Usually the problem is the body becomes too acidic, often termed acidosis, this is mostly due to the typical American diet, which is far too high in acid-producing animal products like meat, eggs and dairy, and far too low in alkaline-producing foods like fresh vegetables. Additionally, we eat acid-producing processed foods like white flour and sugar and drink acid-producing beverages like coffee and soft drinks. We use too many drugs, which are acid forming; and we use artificial chemical sweeteners like NutraSweet, Equal, or aspartame, which are extremely acid forming. One of the best things we can do to correct an overly-acid body is to clean up the diet and lifestyle. Food combining can be a problem if you have weakened digestion, usually due to lack of HCl acid in stomach. Adequate HCl in the stomach will assist in removing acid waste build-up.

Over-acidity forces the body to borrow mineralsincluding calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesiumfrom vital organs and bones to buffer (neutralize) the acid and safely removes it from the body. Your body is only able to assimilate minerals and nutrients properly only when its pH is balanced. It is therefore possible for you to be taking healthy nutrients and yet be unable to absorb or use them. If you are not getting the results you expected from natural supplements, look for an acid alkaline imbalance. Severe acidity, if left untreated can lead to autoimmune diseases and all forms of cancer.
